S.F.1 Edit Continued Release Thread (Update 3.6.2 released on 1/24/2026) 3.7.0

After about another month of workin' on it, the next release of the Shining Force 1 Editor is ready to go!

S.F 1 Edit 3.6.0 Features:

New MAJOR Feature: Automatic Backups!

-Under 'File', you can now enable 'Automatic Backups' - doing so will create backups of your ROM before you make any save into a folder where the ROM is dumped with a date and timestamp!

Monsters/Classes:
-Correctly labeled Kane's action - 'Use item in Slot 2'.
-Correctly labeled 'use items' as 'Use item in Slot 1'.
-Toggling on Extended Monsters or Extended Classes automatically saves it and its respective counterpart alongside freeing up the space where the old data rested.

Maps:
-New Hero Movement Script Editor. Allows the modifying of the scripting section that controls the hero's movements during various NPC movement scripts. The data repoints to where the old class names rested. Adding entirely new scripts isn't supported yet, but will be in a future update.
-Fixed the oversight that caused roof layers/tiles to corrupt when using multiple editors. This was caused by the roof data not getting cleared amongst instances and more or less getting jumbled.

Text Editing:
-A complete rework and overhaul to the text editor that does the following:
1. Shows a preview panel for how the text will look in-game, saving hours of development time.
2. Full Cut/Copy/Paste/Selection controls.
3. An info display showing remaining space, what line is selected, etc.
4. Automatic formatting to insert WAIT2's and LINE's while typing.
5. Ability to set hotkeys for all the different control texts.

Graphics:
-WIP Simone graphics processing. No editing capabilities yet.
-Fixed a bug that inflated weapon sprite data when saving, now allowing use of all 64 weapon sprite slots without any issues.
-Can now edit weapon pallets from the weapon sprite view.

Animations:
-A little more work on slowly attempting to process spell animations.
-Fixed issues where the anim editor could potentially crash when setting the '# of frames' to 0.
-Animations will no longer default to weapon sprite 14 as the default last - instead, it'll go to whatever weapon is the last. (Great when you're animating characters who use past weapon sprite 14.)
-Can now see how much space is left for force and enemy animation entries.

Scripting:
-A few more minor backend improvements to reduce lag by up to 20%.
-Can now observe how much data is left for each section after expanding your ROM and saving the section at least once. (Please note that 'Chapter Start Scripts' are not currently capped.)
-Finished 100% parsing Post-Battle cutscene scripts, HOWEVER, saving these scripts is currently not supported due to a multitude of issues I still need to resolve with them.

Music:
-Further improved playback.


THINGS TO NOTE:

1. Extended Characters is **STILL** flawed. Myself and Tyadran have a pseudo-roadmap for fixing it including a rewrote routine by him, I just haven't allotted myself the chance to work on it.

2. The music editor is **STILL** unfinished. Just better playback at this time.

Future Plans:
-Fix my post-battle cutscene script saving code.
-Allow adding additional scripts for hero movement scripts.
-Item Expansion to 256 items (GlacialGuy has worked on the ASM side for this.)
-Editing of Simone graphics.
-Editing of UI GFX and text.
-Music editing.
-Better looking animation editor.

3.6.1 HOTFIX UPDATE!!
It turns out that modifying hero movement scripts wasn't playing nice with repointed and expanded map data, leading to a literal explosion (fun).

So this hotfix disables saving them, and should you have already repointed/saved them, it restores the original code.
